The Photographer Behind the Camera
Hi, I’m Matthew Wallace.
I’ve been running Matthew With A Camera since 2016, photographing families, businesses, and events across Sydney and the Sutherland Shire. Before that, I spent years working in events and hospitality industries that teach you how to plan ahead, adapt when things don’t go to plan, and get the shot without causing a scene.
That background shapes how I work. I arrive prepared, blend into the background, and focus on capturing what’s actually happening rather than directing everyone into stiff poses.
How I Got Into Photography
It started in 2008 on a road trip through the US national parks: Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, Zion. I had a camera and a lot of time to figure out how to use it.
From there I took it seriously. Formal training from 2012, a range of commercial projects, and eventually a client list that now includes some of Sydney’s best-known organisations.
I shoot with full-frame Canon cameras and L-series lenses. More than the gear, though, what clients tend to notice is how the process feels organised, relaxed, and easy.
What Makes the Difference
Over 20 years of working in events and hospitality means I know how to read a room. I know when to step in and when to wait. I know that things change on the day, and that the job is to adapt, not to panic.
Clients often say they barely noticed me during their event and then couldn’t believe how many great shots came out of it.
My work is documentary in style. Real moments, strong compositions, clean results. Whether it’s a corporate conference or a backyard birthday party, I focus on what’s genuine.

A Few Other Things About Me
I’m married to Anna, and we shoot weddings together. I’m a keen cyclist and swimmer. I’ve been a drummer since my teens, both kit and side drumming. Music has given me a sense of timing and rhythm that carries over into photography more than you’d expect.
I also spent 13 years in the Australia Air League Cadets, which is probably where I learned that preparation and discipline matter as much as any natural talent.
